BANGALORE: Corporate America has just made a huge defence of immigration of high skilled professionals into the US, saying that the country's biggest technology brands, including Google, Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Oracle, Microsoft and Qualcomm would not have become what they had but for such immigration.

An 81-page report, prepared on behalf of the US Chamber of Commerce (USCC) and the American Council of International Personnel (ACIP) and released earlier this month, makes a particularly strong defence of India and Indians — the terms appear 43 times, the next highest being China and Chinese with 9 references.

The USCC claims to be the world's largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses of every size, sector and region. The ACIP's mission is to provide the resources and support necessary to advance the placement, training and mobility of highly educated professionals worldwide.

The report, which comes in the wake of several moves in the US in recent times against immigrants, asks: "Can anyone plausibly argue that either Amazon or Apple — two of America's most successful companies over the past decade -- would have been more successful or experienced greater employment growth if they had been barred from hiring high skilled foreign nationals?"
