Burnley man found guilty of canal sex attacks

A man has been found guilty of raping a woman by a canal towpath in Lancashire, and attempting to rape another.

Nizam Ahmed, 38, of Burnley, had denied rape and attempted rape during a week-long trial at Preston Crown Court.

But a jury found he had attacked a woman, 23, as she walked home along the canal bank off Colne Road in Burnley on 28 September.

He also tried to attack an 18-year-old woman on the same spot on 27 August, the court heard.

Ahmed will be sentenced at Preston Crown Court on 15 July.

Det Ch Insp Neil Esseen, of Lancashire Police, said: "These were cowardly, unprovoked attacks on two vulnerable women and I am very pleased that Ahmed has been found guilty today."

He praised the victims' "courage and determination" in helping to convict Ahmed.
